English Conversations
Connecting Through Conversation
Our free, virtual conversation groups are a great way to practice your English speaking and listening skills with a native English speaker and new friends from around the world. The sessions also offer the opportunity to learn more about the Madison community and get answers to cultural questions like, “What is a cheese curd?” and “Can you actually catch fish under the ice on Lake Mendota in the winter?” Group facilitators learn about other cultures while making a positive impact on the success of a few international students. The emphasis is on building confidence and fluency through informal and fun weekly conversations on a variety of topics. Sessions are offered at various days and times, so you’ll have the flexibility to choose the session that fits best with your schedule.

Please note:
-
This is not an English class and we are not “teaching” English. We facilitate English conversations.
-
All proficiency levels are welcome. Participants are encouraged to participate in conversations and should have some English-speaking skills.
-
Each group is led by a MFIS volunteer who is a native English speaker. Volunteers are not English teachers. Their purpose is to lead group conversations and provide support.
-
There are no required books, study guides, or assignments.
-
The online atmosphere is very informal.
-
We talk and listen to one another with respect.
-
Everyone is welcome!
